GLOBAL CREATIVITY AND MEDIA AGENCIES

This is the blog post for week 10 in our last class during trimester 2. It is about how the world are going through right now on how the people in this world get socialised with each other. Research shows that in USA, most of their population prefer to interact or socialised through the internet using social network such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and many more. And they also watch movies, video clips or any kind of videos through online. This affected the business of traditional advertising where people tend to stay inside their cocoon and spend their day in front of their PC or laptop or iPad or any tablet that can connect to the internet.

Not only advertising industry, music industry also being affected by this. Piracy of the albums, it is everywhere in the internet. People did not have to buy the pricy albums anymore where the can download it for free in the internet without any restrictions not not being caught for this act. Not long after if this problem still exist, it will ruin the music industry so bad.

So what the advertising industry did was to include their ads into the internet, most of the website have an ads in it. Using that method, it helps them to make sure that their business can run as usual. But not all can accept on what ads they publish because we know that what an advertising says are not 100% true. People now tend to ignore the ads and this create another problem for the advertising industry.

So what they need to do to make this industry alive? Will advertising will take no part in people’s life anymore? Do they need it?

That is our job as a creative designers to crack our head and create a creative ways to redesign the advertising to suit people’s lifestyle nowadays.

        Dadaist Art

 

Basically Dadaist art is a combination of many things into a one final product. There are a lots of art that is affected from dadaism, such as collage, photo montage, assemblage and readymades. All these kind of arts looked kind of weird but it has its own meaning and symbolic. Such as dragon, dragon is a combination from many kind of animals.

From its head until to its tail. We can see a lion, goat, chicken, fish and snake on dragon. All these combination is considered as a juxtaposition of many animals. Don’t you think dragon is only a myth?

Actually we can apply all these techniques on the modern arts today. As a designer, we need to do a lot of research and study to produce a great artwork and not afraid to do something unusual, like dadaist art technique. People might get confused on what we are trying to do, but that is the first impression.

As it goes, they will think that we need something new in art to keep them interesting. It’s a mixed art, mixed from old and new art. Would it be interesting? Use our creativity to make it interesting.

RANDOM WORD ASSOCIATION… IS IT ACTUALLY RANDOM?

Random Word Association and Juxtaposition are related to each other but they have their own meaning. To explain what is juxtaposition and random word association, I give you an example. Basically juxtaposition is a solution for lazy people, where when there is a problem to solve, using juxtaposition, they use a common solution to solve the problem. They don’t need to think much on how to solve the problem, they tend to use what that they already have in their mind. Unlike random word association, people who used this to solve a problem, they tend to find a new solution or a very creative solution for their problems. Using a random word, they expand the word through a simple logical mind map and from there, we associate the solution to whatever the problem was to one of those branches of the mind map.

COLOURS….

From colour, what can we do to make smokers afraid of the cigarette? We can make the colour of the cigarette is red. People know red is danger, maybe that colour can remind the smokers of the danger of smoking cigarette.

DIRTY…..

What can we do for dirty….. Maybe the packaging or they way the produce the cigarettes, they do it in the dirty places, and show the production of the cigarette in the television or internet. Cool huh??

SIGN……

Sign…. Hmmmmm.. Maybe we can put a signs that can make the smokers disgusting with the cigarettes, such as what can the chemicals inside the cigarettes can affect their mother.

METAL…..

I like this part, what if the cigarette is made from metal? Of course the heat from the fire of the cigarette will make the metal cigarette as hot as fire and the smoker cannot hold the cigarette for any longer.

DID IT WORKS?

Failure? Everyone that achieved a success in their life, there is a failure during the process. Even Thomas Edison failed so many times before he created a perfect light bulb. Between the greatest inventions in this world, not all of the inventions are really useful or made an impact on the communities.

PROTON JUARA

For god sake, would you buy this car?? I do not know how on earth this car can be a Malaysian car, produced by Malaysian. From the design and performance, this car is a crap. The production of this car has been stopped not long after its release into the market. This is a totally failed invention that we can see in Malaysia. What about other countries? There are tons of them!!

Sometimes failed inventions came from a crazy ideas from the inventors, where they try to mix things together to become a one products.

MIND MAP? BRAIN MAP? GOOGLE MAP?

Who does not know about mind map? It is impossible to say that there is a person who did not know about mind map, if they exist, maybe they did not get an education properly. I think mind map was introduced since primary school or some since kindergarten. For me mind map helps me to memorise things easier than just reading a plain text. Also, it can helps me to generate ideas faster and well composed.

 MIND MAP

Mind map is very useful because it has a lot of uses if we know how to use it. It can be as a problem solving, framework design, individual expression of creativity, family tree and so much more, depend on how we use it. To make the mind map more interesting, there is a few tips  such as to use a picture or any diagram in the mind map, use colourful fonts, and create your own design of mind map.

We can be as much creative as we want to design the mind map as long as the mind map is easy to understand and interesting to read. During schooldays, we often asked by the teacher to use mind map as a tool to memorise during exam because the simplicity of a mind map with full of information can help the students a lot. It is faster than to jot down the notes and we tend to get boring easily just to look at the plain text with no diagrams or pictures.

Do designers use mind map to generate ideas?? It still depend on them if they really like to use mind map. Some people would prefer to sketch or jot down notes to get an ideas for their designs rather than to use mind map.

GREEK INVENTIONS

Today, we can see that everything around us, our environment or we can say our world right now, is full of inventions and innovations that was created and improved by the humans. Inventions started not only in 1900s or 2000s era, it came way before those era. For example i choose Greece as the main topic for the well known inventors such as Archimedes, Heron and Pythagoras. 

 

              ARCHIMEDES

He was a engineer, mathamatician, inventor, astronomer and physicist. Most of his inventions were used for war. He invented siege engines and the screw pump and also invented a machine capable of lifting ships out of the water and setting them on fire using an array of fire. Most of his inventions were used for war and protected Syracuse when the Romans laid siege to it for two years. He also discovered the number pi and what is believed to be the most important physics invention, that showed there was a relationship between volume, mass and pressure and without that important discovery, almost none of the inventions today would exist. His death came at the hands of a roman soldier during a war and his last words were ‘do not disturb my circles.

I think what made Archimedes is so creative because of his surrounding. He lived in Greece where it is a big kingdom at that time. Every nation fears of them because of their strength in war. So Archimedes was affected on this and he created most of his inventions for wars. With his intelligent, he helps his nation with his inventions.

ENVIRONMENTS THAT MADE ME BE MORE CREATIVE PERSON

Surrounding is important for me to generates an idea. Sometimes when i got stuck on generating new ideas, i look to my surroundings randomly and sometimes it works. The place that i prefer to do my stuffs such as drawing, painting and designing is in the place that got a lot of pictures, magazines, figurines, colourful furniture and of course it is in my room. 😀 Besides, I also love to spend my time doing my works at the cafe where it is a very quite and calm such as Starbucks. . Their coffee are good too! These things make me feel more comfortable to do my works n helps me to use my brain wisely. 

INVENTION? INNOVATION?

Certainly the process of innovation in this era is a lot more faster than before. Year by year, we always see a new products being invented or innovated. For example, Apple inc. they keep on coming with a new products with the latest technology. Apple’s iPad, is the first Apple PC tablet on the market. They say that the iPad can make the laptop or PC users change to the tablet as their primary notebook.

Basically the iPad is not an invention from the Apple inc. It came from a tablet before the birth of iPad. Steve Job is very genius that he combine his ideas to make an innovation towards the tablet. So he came out with an iPad which is now is being used all around the world. The iPad is very popular because of its interface and its user friendly, from kids until adult can use it without any problem. This is the important part of an innovation because we need to improve the quality of the product so that people will love it. That is what Apple did every time they come out with a new products. The tablet certainly will take over the notebook user in a years to come, one of the reason is it is handy and small.

DO SCHOOLS KILL CREATIVITY??

If we look at our education system, especially in Malaysia, we can say that our education kills the creativity that everyone have. Malaysian education system mainly focus on how to get a job not to make or create a job. In school, we learn Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry which a subjects that is not related to any creativity. Art subjects did not get any attention from the government as the subject is not included in any examination as a core subject. Why there is no art school for the young children of our generation? Why we only focused on the subjects that will lead us to be a ‘human robot’ in future? 

In Malaysia, basically we did not have any specialisation in any aspects especially on technology. We only depend on other country for technologies. This is because we lack of research and development. Why? Because of our education system provides a learning process that lead the student to work for someone, not to create our own work. What if we have a schools that focus only teaching dancing, drawing, sculpting, creative studies and many more. Also we can have a schools that teach the students how to invent a new things or product into this world in a creative way. In that way we can produce a creative person that can think outside the box and can come out with a creative solutions for each problems because they are taught to think creatively during their school days.

In my opinion, I can say that we need to do something on our education system in Malaysia if we want to compete with other countries, not to rely on them so much. We can see Japan’s technology on electronics. They have far more advance technology than America even though their country is so small then America. They have a quality students and workers to produce a new technologies that other countries did not have.

 

WORDS THAT ARE CONSIDERED AS CREATIVE AND NOT CREATIVE

5 creative words

Apple  – For me, why Apple is creative because they innovates a products that made our life easier. They innovates something creative enough to attract the customers to buy their products. Such as Iphone, Ipad, Ipod and so much more. What they did is, they create something user friendly where all ages can use it with no complication. Simple but attractive.

Football  – Football is creative because u cannot score a goal without a creativity in your team play. You might find some problems if you play a direct football against a good defensive team. For me creativity is needed in football in order to win a game. 

Food  – There is a lot of creativity inside foods. The more creativity u put inside foods, the more flavours u can have in your foods. They way you present the food, also need a creativity on it to attract peoples to eat it. Different countries have different style of foods, so we know that food and creativity cannot be separated.

Music  – Music is an art which I think it needs a creative people to create a beautiful song. You cannot simply write a song n combine it with a random melodies, it will be a disaster for the song. When we create the lyrics, we need to have a metaphor, simile, hyperbole, assonance and many more to make the lyrics beautiful and nice to hear.

Camera – Camera snap a pictures that can tell us thousand things with one single shot. We can create a creative shot with creative angle and creative perspective. With a single camera, you can have a beautiful photo with a single snap. Of course you need a creativity to produce a beautiful photo.

5 non creative words

Nokia  – Lately Nokia becomes not creative anymore because handphone user right now prefer to get an Apple Iphone or Samsung handphone. The statistics shows that most of the handphone user in the world using Iphone and Samsung handphone as their favourite mobile phone. Nokia did not come out with a creative phone to attract users to buy their phones. That is why they are far behind from Apple or Samsung in the market.

Sleep  – When we sleep, nothing happen to us, most of the part of our body’s activity stop. It need rest to function back as usual. So nothing creative happen during our sleep time. 

Clock  – Clock can only show us time, or with a date on it. Nothing special or creative about clock. Maybe the design can be creative, but it still shows us the time and date, not more than that.

Ocean  – Ocean represents calm. When I go the beach, I saw the ocean that makes me feel relax and calm. It helps me to release my tension. The ocean does not tell me any creative things that I can relate to my life. It is just simply a place to go and have a good quality times to chill you out.

Cat – For me why I picked cat as a non creative word because cats are animal that spend most of their time on sleeping. We can say that cats are lazy animal, unlike dog.
